Probate valuation
Of particular interest to solicitors or anyone who has been
appointed an executor of a will, this type of valuation will enable
your solicitor to obtain probate of a will and H.M. Revenue and
Customs to determine the correct amount of estate duty that may be
due. The probate valuation can also be used to ensure equitable
division of an estate. Please bear in mind that this kind of
valuation is not to be used for obtaining insurance as the values
have no relationship to the replacement value of the items.
How it's done
When we provide a valuation for probate we take into
consideration all the factors which would effect the likely sale
price of the goods in question in an "open market" situation, as if
they were offered for sale on the date of death and in the best
market available at the time. "Best market available" could mean
your local jewellery shop, a specialist antique dealer, an auction
house or even by private sale. As we do not buy and sell jewellery
our opinion is based on a researched average price. In this way we
seek to give a wholly disinterested and unbiased opinion.
